There I said it. Now, in the past I engaged in hyperbole when discussing politics because I was more interested in ruffling feathers than educating and informing people. But with Election Day being less than two weeks away, the Southern Democrats have engaged in some of the sleaziest politics I have seen in a very long time.
The Democrats are in danger of losing control of the United States Senate, thus giving Republicans a majority that President Obama will have to work with in order to advance his agenda. In a “Hail Mary” attempt, Southern Democrats have injected race into the election with such flyers trying to scare the black community to turn out in large numbers for the Democrats. Essentially, if the Republicans win, President Obama will be impeached and/or lynched (according the flyer) and your children will be gunned down in the street like Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
At first glance, any fair-minded citizen would be appalled at how the Democrats are trying to spread fear into the black community, but, if history is any indicator of the present, Democrats are the champions at spreading fear within the black community.
Democrats are the authors of the infamous Jim Crow laws, whose main purposes were to disenfranchise black people and disrupt Republican advances in the South. President Woodrow Wilson (Democrat) started implementing segregation in federal offices.
Democrats were staunch opponents of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1964, with then President Johnson having to acquire support from those racist Republicans to make racial justice a reality in the United States. Don’t be fooled by President Johnson’s altruism in signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If then Senator Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy hadn’t been, to use a President Obama term, obstructionists we would have been learning about the 1957 Civil Rights Act in our history books.
I hit back in this way because the chairman of the Georgia Democrats is DuBose Porter and his organization, the Georgia Democrats, are responsible for the despicable ads that infer that a Republican win will lead to the gunning down of black children in the streets. The irony is obviously wasted on some, but I would hope that the more season members of the black community chuckle at the notion that they should heed the warnings of a white Southern Democrat. For those you may be inquiring, DuBose Porter is a white man. So if he can infer that blacks will suffer violence if the Democrats are defeated, then as a caucasian-looking man, I can assert that the a vote for the Democrats is a vote for bondage. And not the sometimes fun/ sometimes dangerous type of bondage that Anthony Weiner likes.
Historically, the white-man Democrat has not exactly been the ideal champion for black community between the fire hoses and the lynching. Speaking of lynching, in the North Carolina Democrat Flyer that depicts a black person being lynched in the background, how many white Democrats are mean-mugging in the photo?
Not only have the Democrats had a rocky past on Civil Rights issues, but they have an even rockier past of trying to scare the black community with misleading political ads. It’s almost as if they don’t want the black community to leave them, so they tell them lies to keep them loyal.
The NAACP produced an attack ad against George W. Bush and his 2000 presidential campaign for not signing a Hate Crimes bill. When Bush was a governor, a man named James Byrd was dragged to death by Shawn Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer, and John King. In the ad, there was footage of a chain and a hitch of a truck, indicating a reenactment of Bryd’s death. Again, using props, they had Byrd’s daughter say, “So when Gov. George W. Bush refused to sign hate crimes legislation, it was like my father was killed all over again.” Essentially, George Bush is responsible for her pain and suffering. But the information that was held from the ad was that Lawrence Russell Brewer met the business end of a lethal injection needle; John King is currently on death row and Shawn Berry will ready for parole… in 2038. True, Bush did not believe in the legitimacy of Hate Crimes, but he sure did believe in the use of execution. This crime was done in Texas by the way. I hear they execute murderers in Texas.
Then there was blowhard Vice President Al Gore getting all hot and bothered at a NAACP Convention claiming that, “The Republicans know theirs is the wrong agenda for African Americans. They don’t even want to count you in the census!” What Gore failed to mention was that, were it up to his father, blacks would not have recognized as equal citizens as he voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Whoops!
Within short history of our country, Democrats have gone from being pro-slavery and pro-Jim Crow to pro-paternalism.
The flyers that the Democrats are using are trying to treat the black community like some monolithic group of people instead of a people being capable of looking at both candidates and making their decisions for themselves. Instead, they have to warn blacks about the very tactics that they historically used on blacks and say that the Republicans are going to come after your children… you know… like they used to. Again, the irony that Southern Democrats are warning blacks about the dangers of racial violence and discrimination is almost too much for my near diabetic body can take, but then not everyone gains as much inappropriate pleasure from schadenfreude as I do.
I think a good counter-argument to this ad would be, “If Kay Hagan wins, Obama will still do nothing for your community.” At least that is what NAACP President Benjamin Jealous and Tavis Smiley think. Based on how the black community has faired under President Obama, it might be time for them to return to their roots within the Republican Party.
One person from the black community is not buying what the Democrats are selling in these flyers.
I am a 59-year-old African American man, born and raised in Jacksonville, and now living with my family in New Bern.
I am insulted by the arrogance of the Democratic candidates during this election because they talk to us through their advertisements as if we are stupid.
My kids attend public schools here in New Bern. Not only are the staff and teachers at the schools outstanding, my kids have plenty of books.
I seriously doubt if money is really being transferred from the schools to yacht owners. But each time someone purchases a yacht, jobs are created and secured at companies like Hatteras Yachts located right here in New Bern.
I was shocked to hear the radio commercial that featured a couple of ladies suggesting the Republicans were trying to take away the rights of African Americans to vote. The voter ID initiative, (if that’s what they’re referring to) is to preserve the integrity of the vote, and a photo ID can be acquired for free through the North Carolina DMV.
And recently, the commitment of the incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan to a strong military and American security was questioned by the Republican candidate. In her rebuttal commercial, the Democratic Senatorial candidate cited her relatives who have served in the military and her support for the administration’s current strategy regarding the terror group ISIS.
Well, almost everyone in Eastern North Carolina has relatives currently serving or who have previously served in the military. Despite all the “support of the administration’s ISIS strategy,” it doesn’t seem like much progress is being made at stopping them. I just finished watching a CBS, 60 minutes story on Benghazi which is completely inconsistent with the administration’s story.
These things do not invoke trust within me or many of my friends for the current Obama administration. The Democrats are spending an awful lot of money on negative ads designed to discredit Republicans.
Why would anyone choose that kind of strategy over one that highlights their own accomplishments?
Thank you for allowing me to voice this opinion.
David Chadwick, New Bern
I would encourage the black community to make an informed decision devoid of passions and emotions. If you honestly think the Democratic Party has benefited you, by all means vote for them. But if you are looking for a change, you might want to vote for a Republican. At least you will be able to say that you did it at least once. But based on these flyers that the Democrats are putting out there, they are more interested in scaring you into voting for them rather than persuading you. I think the Democrats are aware of their “success” in building up the black community over the past 6 years that they are trying to bring back horrid events of the ancient past; horrid events that were once the hallmark of the Democratic Party. Just know that if the Democrats had the facts on their side, they would not have to resort to such tactics in order to get you to vote. Remember the lawyer’s adage, “If you have the law on your side, argue the law; if you have the facts, argue the facts; if you have neither, pound the table.” And boy are the Democrats really destroying some centerpieces.
