Perhaps you shouldn’t have clicked over to “seXXXygrandmas.org” after you logged out of Facebook.
A hacker discovered that, once you log out, the party don’t stop as far as Facebook is concerned. In fact, they will continue to collect and monitor data.
Of course, Facebook panicked when this information came out, “[insisting] the information is only used for security purposes, aggregate statistics or it it not logged at all.”
That sounds like “we’re only tracking it to keep you safe, or earn more money, or we’re totally not tracking you…who do you believe—us or your lying eyes?!”
Once you log out, they leave cookies that continually funnel information back to them…“[t]he cookies relay information from any site you visit that contains a link to Facebook such as a ‘like’ button back to Facebook. With this data, Facebook can map out your web usage.”
So any site with a Facebook plugin is sending information back to Facebook. And that’s damn near every site now that isn’t a Geocities page. That’s wholly reassuring.
Who needs Big Brother to monitor you when you’ve voluntarily given him access?
