It’s oddly satisfying to see the Westboro “Baptist” “Church” website get hacked.
However, the “God Hates Fags” group is not a “Christian fundamentalist group”, as Eric Larson of Mashable asserts.
The group is a tiny hate cult organized around Fred Phelps, failed Democratic politician and now-senior-citizen who is at the head of the mostly-Phelps-family group of around 60-80 members.
As far as being “Christian fundamentalist”, this cult in no way follows the fundamentals of Christianity.
Their use of “Baptist” is hilarious, considering the Southern Baptist Convention aimed at the Westboro “Baptists” when they “denounced ‘the speech or activities of any individual or group that brings shame upon the name of Christ and His gospel,’ and urged its members ‘to continue to speak biblically and authoritatively with conviction, kindness, and gentleness,’ a far cry from the Westboro “Baptists” picketing the funerals of dead tornado victims or loudly proclaiming “God Hates Fags”.
Calling them in any way “Christian fundamentalist”, “Baptist”, or hell, even a “church” is a smear against actual Christians who have absolutely nothing to do with these crazy people.
