The Violence Against Women Act is a sucker of a bill.
You vote for it, you’re voting for a labyrinth of questionably-legal provisions.
You vote against it, you’re smeared as hating women (who would be PRO-violence against women?!)
Congressman John Duncan, who is still undecided on the bill, pointed this out:
“Every bill is given a motherhood-and-apple-pie title,” Duncan said outside the House chamber. “But if you voted [based] on the title, you’d vote for every bill up here. If we’d all done that, the country would have crashed a long time ago.
“So this is another bill with a motherhood-and-apple-pie title,” he added.
So let’s see how this was received. According to Rebecca Laber:
“GOP Rep. Dismisses Violence Against Women Act As A ‘Bill With A Motherhood-And-Apple-Pie Title’”
Obamacare did the same thing. The bill wasn’t called “Government Takeover of Healthcare”, it was called the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”. Well who would vote against protecting patients and affordable care?!
Monsters, that’s who.
You can’t judge a book by its cover. You can’t judge a bill by its title. A bill could be called “The Ponies and Glitter and Cookies for Everyone Act” and talk about F-16 funding for the Defense Department. Newsflash: the title of a bill is designed by the authors of the bill to get you to vote for the bill so if you don’t vote for the bill you look like a complete bag of douche. This is what Congressman Duncan is saying. Instead he gets smeared about not caring about women.
