The ballad of Jodi Arias

I have no clue why this Jodi Arias woman has gotten so much national attention. It’s another instance of the media finding a strange murder case and latching onto it like a puppy with a chew toy, dropping it at your feet nightly until it’s ragged and the squeaker’s broken. However, now that her trial has come to a close and they’ve found that she is, indeed, guilty of killing her boyfriend, some strange bits have been revealed.

First of all, she told Inside Edition in 2008, “No jury is going to convict me. I am innocent, and you can mark my words on that.” This sounds like Pathological Liar 101. You don’t proclaim your innocence by claiming you’ll never be convicted. That’s like saying “of COURSE I didn’t do it…YOU CAN’T PROVE IT”. Nothing screams “innocence” like that.

Then, it got weirder: “In her court testimony, she said that Alexander had become abusive and turned particularly violent on the day of the slaying. She said that she lied about her innocence earlier because she planned suicide.” Wait, what? Why didn’t she say he was abusive to begin with? Why did that just come up during the day of the testimony…2 years later?

Here’s what happened that night:

On the night Travis Alexander was killed, he and Jodi Arias had a sexual encounter complete with racy, pornographic photos they had taken just hours before his death.

Great for the family album!

Police found them inside Alexander’s camera, which had been left in the washing machine of the Mesa, Ariz., townhouse where he lived. But the camera also included pictures of the woman dragging her dead lover across the floor, and one of her reflection in his eyes seconds before she killed him. Arias was arrested about a month later at her grandparents’ house in Yreka, Calif. She initially denied having anything to do with the incident, but when she was confronted with the pictures, she claimed armed robbers had killed Alexander and threatened her life.

So…they found pictures of her dragging his body across the floor, and her crazy eyes right before she killed him…and she claimed armed robbers killed him and threatened her a month later? If she were innocent, wouldn’t she have called the police to come over that night to put her in protective custody?

Oh well, let’s put some logic aside and read some sexts!

An early text from Arias read: “Hmm…if ur a lucky boy and u promise to give me a well-deserved spanking…” and other more sado-masochistic communications that we can’t post here.

So why tease, ABC?

Well, now she’s been convicted and she will probably get the death penalty.

Here’s what she has to say:

The worst outcome for me would be natural life… Longevity runs in my family, and I don’t want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place…I said years ago I’d rather get death than life and that still is true today. I believe death is the ultimate freedom, so I’d rather just have my freedom as soon as I can get it.

I find the death penalty to still be a useful and important practice, but I think in this situation we should really just keep her alive out of spite.
