Think we’re the only non-communist country that gives ridiculous government subsidies to boondoggles?
Enter Japan, where the whaling industry is no longer the “job-creator” or “economic engine” it was centuries ago. In fact, “[the] Fisheries Agency of Japan has been propping it up with public money, giving 715 million yen ($8.9 million) in 2011.” Since 2006, the industry has been “unable to cover its costs”.
But it’s okay, because whaling is a national symbol, right? A proud bond shared amongst the Japanese people.
Well…“only 11 per cent of Japanese citizens support whaling”
Sounds like another government kickback that needs to get harpooned.
