Cyprus is a small island nation in the Mediterranean. It’s half loyal to Greece, half loyal to Turkey.
And in case you haven’t heard, the government is in deep shit, defaulting on millions in people’s savings and shutting down their main bank “to salvage the island’s banking sector and secure 10 billion euros in aid from international lenders. Thousands of people lost their life savings.”
The government has decided to bailout the banks, but the system is unstable and the government can’t afford a bailout with defaulting banks.
Andreas Efstathiou, a Cypriot artist, protested the recent government bailout by setting up toilets outside the government’s central bank, lids raised like tombstones.
According to Efstathiou, “I felt the need to protest the situation my country is in … and I think the choice of toilets has a pretty clear symbolism to everyone.”
We got the symbolism here—Cyprus is in the shitter, and everyone else is not far behind.
