Rand Paul praised from unlikely circles

Rand Paul, Republican Senator from Kentucky, gained some unlikely support in the drone strikes debate.

Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, praised Rand Paul on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, and even the host himself supported Paul’s efforts.

However, Maher summed up Paul’s position as “‘Foreigners? Fuck them,’ and criticized Paul for acting like we shouldn’t care about them,” which is not true.

Paul stood up for drone strikes against American citizens within American borders, an issue that raises enormous constitutional questions.

The issue of using drones outside of our territory is a separate issue. Few would argue against drones as a legitimate military device that can be used to save soldier’s lives on a battlefield.

And Maher agrees:

That’s not to say all drone attacks are bad. You know, some people do need killing. It’s like what I say about the death penalty, let’s just kill the right people.

Shaming Paul as racist or anti-foreigner is disingenuous when you hold the same position.
