Your Google history is between you and Google, right?
Not if the Obama administration has their way.
The Justice Department has invoked National Security Letters, “a secret electronic data-gathering technique that does not need a judge’s approval and recently was declared unconstitutional in an unrelated court case”, in order to force Google to hand their secret records over to the FBI.
The worst part? If you get an NSL, “it’s illegal to tell anyone”. So it’s basically them coming to search you, without your consent, and you must stay silent.
It’s a clear overreach of federal power, and while it’s uncomforting that Google has all your history, it’s 10x worse to think that both Google and the federal government could.
The notion of “privacy” under this administration is clearly just an illusion.
