You remember those old-timey cartoons where the protagonist would turn into a detective, looking for clues to finger the perp, and he’d find out in the end that it was him all along?
In this case, a cop investigating a case of a woman whose ex-boyfriend threatened to publish porn of her on the internet (known as revenge porn, which surprisingly isn’t getting off to getting back at perceived slights) found himself becoming involved with the woman, eventually getting more photos of her, and then threatened to publish those online.
Rebekah Wells first encountered the phenomenon of “revenge porn” in 2010 when an ex-boyfriend published several intimate photos of her to a website, according to Florida-based NBC 2.
She reported the incident to the police in Naples, Florida in November that year, and said at the time Deputy Vito Celiberte seemed happy to help her. The two became involved a year later, then Wells says that even more photos were taken in May of 2012, this time by her new boyfriend.
But Wells has a message for her detractors:
But when someone shifts the blame to me, do you know what I say? I say, ‘Congratulations, because that’s exactly what the perpetrator wants you to think. He wants you to think I am a dumb whore who makes poor decisions.’ People just don’t get it. And you know what? Most of them won’t get it until it happens to them or someone they love.
I’m trying to imagine this happening to someone I love, like my grandma, and then I get a little queasy inside.
But what it boils down to is this: if you’re concerned about nekkid pictures getting online, don’t take them. And if it happens to you twice, well, you really gotta re-evaluate your decisions.
